So Now 2nd Gen Windows Phones Not Getting Apollo?

Soon Microsoft will come out and reveal everything you want to know about Windows Phone 8 (aka Apollo) but the biggest question out there is will my 2nd Gen Windows Phone get the upgrade?
We have heard they will, they won't but nothing in the in between category. Well guess what? Now coming out of The German Business Week they are claiming that Microsoft will be be taking the in between route.
”An update is not technically possible because Windows Mobile 8 uses different chip sets.” They have also stated that a Microsoft manager was quoted as saying: ”If people have the same functions on their smartphones, they do not care what version number the operating system is.”
While this may not be a 100 percent accurate quote because of translation (no one in the know would call it "Windows Mobile 8") you get the point. What they are telling us is there is going to be versions of Apollo. One for the slower 2nd Gen Windows Phone and one for the quicker 3rd Gen Windows Phones.
I am unsure if I am ok with this as a consumer. While I don't want a full bore Windows Phone 8 on my 2nd Gen phone if it can't handle it, if I just bought the phone (and let's face most people have) I'm steamed that I can't the full version of Windows Phone 8.
I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments on this one.
