In 2012, the technology sector had a lot of successes and failures, with some being quite unexpected.
Most of the battle in the consumer technology was in the Mobile market, with Apple and Samsung fighting each other while Nokia and RIM struggled. With all the lawsuits, Apple was just behind Android with their very own iOS, which still remains a one of the most popular operating systems. Apple's iPhone 5 and iPad mini gained a lot of popularity but Samsung and Asus passed them with their Galaxy S3 phones and Nexus 7 tablets.
This year was a hard hit for the gaming industry. Couple of years back, this sector was considered "Recession Proof", but now deals with studios closing and huge slips in profits. Even though there were much anticipated releases like the Sony PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Wii U, people turned towards smartphone and tablet gaming and Facebook casual games like ChefVille made by Zynga. Even with the game releases from Super-Hit franchises, more people chose to download games from the App Store or Google Play. With the expected releases of both Xbox 720 and Sony PlayStation 4, we hope that the video game sector will see a rise.
In the mobile market like stated on the first paragraph, after the tough fight between Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5, Galaxy S3 was named the smartphone of the year. When it comes to tablets, Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Apple iPad mini and Google Asus Nexus 7 gained their popularity. In the computer market, the lead was taken by Ultrabooks. These thin and light computers are capable of high performance and are extremely fast. Fortunately or unfortunately these super slim computers were running on the so called stylish metro Windows 8 lacked in sales and overall appearance. The OS was basically an ugly masked Windows 7.
With all these things that happened this year, we are eagerly waiting to see whats going to come next year, with much attention turned towards Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5S and cheap (even $99) Android tablets. Consumer Electronics Show happening in January 2013 and The Mobile World Congress taking place in February 2013 at Barcelona are two other reasons to look forward to the New Year, year 2013.
