According to a tweet from Windows Phone Columbia the Windows Phone 7.8 update should start rolling out in ten days! Not for everyone naturally that would cause server meltdowns. However "some phones" will receive the update than according to the official tweet.
This update is expected to run from January 31 all the way till March with carrier devices getting the update first and the factory unlocked phones playing second fiddle.
While older "legacy" devices can't get the full Windows Phone 8 upgrade it is still a worth while update if simply for the new start screen alone. I have personally gone from a Windows Phone 7 device to a Windows Phone 8 device and once you get an experience with the new start screen there is no going back.
