Worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totaled 417 million units in the third quarter of 2010, a 35 percent increase from the third quarter of 2009, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphone sales grew 96 percent from the third quarter last year, and smartphones accounted for 19.3 percent of overall mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2010.

“This is the third consecutive double-digit increase in sales year-on-year, indicating that consumer demand is healthy,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “This quarter saw Apple and Android drive record smartphone sales. Apple's share of the smartphone market surpassed Research In Motion (RIM) in North America to put it second behind Android while Android volumes also grew rapidly making it the No. 2 operating system worldwide.”

Verizon Wireless and Samsung today announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Continuum, a Galaxy S smartphone. The Continuum is the world’s first smartphone designed with a dedicated ticker display, which provides users with up-to-the-minute news, sports, finance and social networking updates for maximized multitasking.

The Continuum features two separate but integrated displays: a 3.4-inch touch screen Super AMOLED main display and a customizable 1.8-inch Super AMOLED dedicated ticker display that streams customized information in real time. Additionally, the Continuum is powered by Android 2.1, with support for Google Mobile Services, including Gmail, YouTube, Android Market and more. Facebook is expected to reveal a new partnership with handset manufacturer INQ at an event tonight in California. The social networking site is holding a ‘Facebook Mobile’ event, where a handset manufactured by INQ, but branded by Facebook will be unveiled. The handset is expected to run on Android and will feature an instant messaging service similar to the BlackBerry IM.
